Electricity Generation

Societal Implications and Applications

Modern western society’s dependence on large amounts of electricity raises all sorts of concerns with the environment.  From the Ontario government shutting down coal-fired power plants, to the controversy over nuclear power, to backlashes over the creation of wind farms and their impact on the people, birds, and animals around them, issues abound.

Interesting alternatives have appeared, or become more feasible in the past few years.  For example, dramatic drops in cost have made solar power generation more practical, and elaborate plans have been made to harvest the power of tidal flows.  New possibilities generally come with their own, new advantages and disadvantages.
