Electricity & Magnetism

Introduction

Electricity and magnetism are interrelated, as you will learn during this course.  At first, however, scientists didn’t make the connection.  Electricity, and charge was first observed as the force that sometimes arose when you rubbed two dissimilar materials together.  This observation was attributed to an unknown electric liquid.  Likewise, magnetism was associated with the behaviour of certain materials.

In particular, in the lessons on this web site, we will explore some of the relationships between moving charge (also known as current) and the magnetic fields that are interrelated with it, the applications in the world around us, and the effects on society and the environment.

Lest you doubt the interrelationship, it is no coincidence that electro-magnetism (combined) was designated as one of the four fundamental forces of the universe.
